Aetherdrift: Fast, Ferocious, And a Spark

Posted by Shir10ley on January 20, 2025

What happens when a plane sheds its painful past and embraces a bold future of evolution, revolution, and speed? Welcome to Aetherdrift, a thrilling journey through the vibrant, reimagined world of Aviskar, where resilience and ingenuity take center stage.

At its heart lies Ghirapur, a city buzzing with creativity, intellect, and rebellion, where the 2nd Annual Ghirapur Grand Prix (GGP) takes center stage. This exhilarating multi-race festival celebrates the ingenuity of post-invasion Avishkar, inviting participants from across the multiverse to partake in a spectacle of engineering brilliance and cultural exchange. Let’s delve into the story of Aetherdrift, where the ferocious spirit of racing and revolutionary fervor ignite sparks of possibility.

Why Is The Plane Of Aether Renamed?

Aetherdrift is set in the plane of Aviskar, previously known as Kaladesh. Wizards of the Coast changed the name of Chandra Nalaar’s home plane because the term "kala" (kālā, KAH-lah) can carry a derogatory connotation. In lore, the name change is depicted by a vote of the new government, the Avishkar Assembly, to replace Kaladesh with Avishkar. Since Kaladesh represented the plane’s cumbersome and painful history, Avishkar now reflects the forward-looking revolutionary spirit of the plane and its people.

Ghirapur will serve as the major setting for Aetherdrift. It is a haven for radical culture, artistic expression, and academic study. It is hardly surprising that the New Culture Collective (NCC) organized races, shows, and papers to stir up student organizations, engineer councils, and factory floors to rebel against the Consulate. During the Phyrexian invasion, the New Culture Collective protected Avishkar by coordinating transportation, logistics, and evacuation plans. Following the invasion, the Avishkar Assembly was formed as a result of the Indigo Revolution, which soon overthrew the old Consulate through a coalition of old renegade revolutionaries, NCC partisans, and postwar instability.

The 2nd Annual Ghirapur Grand Prix

The Ghirapur Grand Prix started as the Ghirapur Sprint decades ago. The Sprint was an informal, sanctioned race held at night. Participants raced across Ghirapur through checkpoints, collecting marks on their race itineraries. It was one of the largest, most popular, and most dangerous races that the New Culture Collective used as a recruiting measure to instigate revolutionary gusto against Avishkar’s academic institution and the repressive Consulate.

What is the Ghirapur Grand Prix (GGP)? The Avishkar Assembly organized this racing event to highlight the accomplishments of the plane's post-invasion, and post-indigo revolution by showcasing the new governing body's ability to manage interplanar logistics, administration, coordination, cultural wealth, and economic possibilities. It is the second annual interplanar edition of the race, and the Avishkar Assemble hopes to capitalize on the success of the inaugural Ghirapur Grand Prix by expanding the festivities beyond Ghirapur and Avishkar by inviting teams and delegates from across the multiverse to participate. The GGP is a multi-race festival spanning Avishkar, Amomket, and Mugraganda. Following the Grand Prix's ceremonial departure, several lower-division events take place, ranging from single-day sprints to full-distance races.

10 Ghirapur Grand Prix Racers

Aetherdrift could bring an exciting array of creature types and mechanics, potentially spanning all ten racing teams. These teams may be two-color pair tribals like in the Ravnica sets. From hints of goblins, beasts, and merfolk, the set seems poised to explore unique synergies and creative designs. Speculation also swirls around a potential new cycle of two-color Gearhulks, which might offer fresh takes on both classic archetypes and innovative strategies, adding intrigue to this dynamic multiverse adventure.
